Users on Pixel 11 phones can now hand a task like ordering food, booking a reservation, or checking whether a product is in stock to Google’s Gemini assistant, which will place the call, work through automated phone menus, and wait on hold. A live transcript runs on screen and the user can jump in and take over at any moment, giving more direct control than earlier attempts at automated business calls.
What the new Gemini call feature actually does
Described by Google as an early experiment, the feature lets a user ask Gemini to call a business and handle one of four jobs: placing an order, scheduling an appointment, making a reservation, or confirming product availability. When the call connects, the assistant works its way through any automated phone-tree menus and stays on hold until a human picks up.
Three safeguards are built in this time. Gemini says it is an AI when the call begins. A real-time text transcript of the conversation streams to the user. And the user can take over the call themselves at any point, which earlier Google tools did not allow.
How it compares to Google’s earlier call features
The new function is not Google’s first attempt at automating business calls. A year earlier, Google showed a “Call for me” tool that also placed calls on a user’s behalf, but it did not hand control back mid-call the way the current version does.
Two older Google tools are still relevant. The 2024 “Talk to a Live Representative” feature lets an AI assistant wait on hold so the user does not have to. “Direct My Call” takes a different tack, transcribing automated menu options so a person can read them and remember them without re-listening.
Who can use it today, and how it compares to Apple and Meta
The business-calling feature is limited to Pixel 11 testers for now, and Google has not said when or if it will reach more devices. Apple’s automatic call screening and Google’s own call-screening on Pixel phones have been more widely adopted so far.
Meta is testing a similar calling assistant across a wider range of devices. The rollout there has been rocky. Some businesses hung up once they realized they were speaking to the company’s Muse AI, so Meta tried hiring human contractors to fill the gaps. That experiment ran into privacy concerns and trouble with call center operators, and it wound down. An earlier Meta effort, Facebook M, was also promoted as AI-driven but relied on humans behind the scenes.
Why businesses may push back
Even with built-in disclosure and a takeover button, the open question is how the people answering the phone will react. Meta’s experience with Muse AI showed that businesses are willing to drop the call when they know it is an AI on the line. If that pattern repeats, the usefulness of the feature depends less on what the assistant can technically do and more on how the other end of the line chooses to respond.
FAQ
What can Gemini’s new business-calling feature do for users?

How does Gemini identify itself when calling a business?
Gemini identifies itself as an AI at the start of the call, provides a real-time text transcript as the conversation happens, and lets the user take over the call at any point.
Who can use the Gemini business-calling feature right now?
The feature is being tested as an early experiment limited to Pixel 11 owners. Google has not confirmed when or whether it will roll out beyond those testers.
