AI agents are already buying products, booking services, and completing tasks on behalf of users, without those users ever visiting a website. A new stack of protocols (MCP, A2A, NLWeb, and UCP) is now determining which brands get seen, cited, and transacted with in the agentic era. These standards are live and being adopted by Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and Shopify right now, and they will reshape how search visibility is earned.
Here’s what every SEO needs to understand.
Why This Matters: The Shift From Retrieval to Action
Traditional search returns a list of pages. The user clicks, browses, and decides.
Agentic search is different. An AI agent receives a task, “find me the best local SEO agency” or “reorder office supplies under $200”, and completes it autonomously. The agent crawls, evaluates, compares, and transacts. The user sees a result, not a list of links.
The implications for SEO are significant:
- By end of 2026, traditional search volume may be projected to drop 25%, according to Gartner.
- Web traffic from generative AI referrals may have increased 10× from July 2024 to February 2025
- Nearly 50% of US shoppers now use AI tools for at least one shopping task
- Industry projections suggest that, by 2030, up to 25% of global e-commerce sales may be agent-enabled.
Your site’s visibility is no longer measured only in rankings and clicks.
The Four Protocols Powering the Agentic Web
What Is MCP and Why Should SEOs Care?
Created by: Anthropic (November 2024)
What it does: Provides a universal standard for how AI systems connect to external tools, data sources, and APIs.
Think of MCP as a USB-C port for AI applications. Before MCP, every AI app required custom integrations for every data source, an N×M problem. MCP solves this with a single open standard.
Now adopted by OpenAI and Google DeepMind, MCP has over 10,000 community-built servers and 97 million monthly SDK downloads within its first year.
SEO implication: Brands with MCP-compatible data endpoints give AI agents clean, structured access to their information. Brands without MCP force agents to infer meaning from scraped pages, creating friction, increasing error rates, and reducing the likelihood of being recommended.
An MCP server lets AI agents discover your brand, not just search engines.
What Does A2A Do for AI Agents?
Created by: Google Cloud (April 2025), now under Linux Foundation governance
What it does: Enables AI agents from different vendors to communicate and collaborate with each other.
Where MCP connects agents to tools and data, A2A enables agents to talk to each other. Agents publish “Agent Cards”, JSON metadata files describing their capabilities, and coordinate through standardized messaging without sharing internal logic or memory.
From launch in April 2025 to 150+ supporting organizations by July 2025, A2A has seen rapid enterprise adoption including Salesforce and ServiceNow.
SEO implication: When AI agents collaborate on complex tasks, they chain queries across multiple sources. Your content must be consistently structured and machine-readable across all pages, not just your homepage. Agents work on a 1-5 second timeout, so fragmented or gated content gets skipped entirely.
How Does NLWeb Change SEO?
Created by: Microsoft (May 2025, Microsoft Build), led by R.V. Guha (inventor of RSS, RDF, and Schema.org)
What it does: Transforms websites into natural language interfaces that both humans and AI agents can query directly.
NLWeb builds on existing formats, Schema.org markup, JSON, RSS, and uses vector embeddings to make website content queryable. Critically, every NLWeb instance automatically functions as an MCP server, meaning it’s immediately accessible to any MCP-compatible AI agent.
Early adopters include Eventbrite, Shopify, Tripadvisor, Allrecipes, and O’Reilly Media. Yoast’s schema aggregation feature for WordPress is positioned as a key enabler for site owners.
SEO implication: This is the most direct shift for traditional SEOs. NLWeb moves the goalposts from “design pages humans want to browse” to “structure content agents can query.” Schema.org markup is no longer optional, it’s the foundation of agentic visibility. Sites without it become opaque to the agent ecosystem.
What Is UCP and Why Is It Urgent for E-Commerce?
Created by: Google with 20+ partners including Shopify, Etsy, Walmart, Target, Mastercard, Visa, and Stripe
What it does: Enables AI shopping agents to discover, evaluate, and purchase products directly within AI surfaces without users visiting product pages.
Merchants expose capabilities via a machine-readable manifest at /.well-known/ucp. The protocol supports REST APIs, A2A, and MCP for integration, and handles the full transaction lifecycle: discovery, checkout, discounts, and order management.
Announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai at NRF 2026, with 20+ launch partners already signed on.
SEO implication: For e-commerce clients, UCP is the most urgent protocol to implement. An agent that can’t transact with your store will transact with your competitor’s. The entire conversion funnel, previously 15+ steps, collapses to a single agent-initiated transaction. Your product data quality, pricing transparency, and merchant center accuracy now directly determine whether AI agents buy from you.
How Do MCP, A2A, NLWeb, and UCP Work Together?
These protocols aren’t competing, they’re complementary layers:
- MCP, connects agents to your data and tools
- A2A lets agents work together to finish tasks that need more than one step.
- NLWeb, makes your website queryable by both humans and agents
- UCP, enables agents to complete purchases from your store
The Linux Foundation’s Agentic AI Foundation now governs these standards, playing the same role W3C played in the early web era.
What Should SEOs Do First?
Implementing every protocol today isn’t required.
1. Audit Your Schema Markup
Schema.org structured data is the foundation of NLWeb compatibility and agent-readability. Every page should have appropriate schema: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, FAQ, Service. Use Google’s Rich Results Test and validate coverage across the entire site, not just the homepage.
2. Consolidate and Structure Your Content
In one cited case, agents cite pages with direct, comprehensive answers 41% of the time. Loosely related or vague content may drop to 29%. Move critical information out of PDFs, gated pages, and fragmented blog posts into consolidated, structured pages agents can query in a single request.
3. Audit LLM Bot Access
Check your robots.txt for rules blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and other AI crawlers. Decide which agents you want to allow. Note: blocking crawl doesn’t prevent citation from cached data, but it does prevent real-time indexing.
4. Make Pricing and Attributes Transparent
Agents evaluate and compare products based on structured attributes: pricing, specifications, availability, certifications. Vague “contact us for pricing” pages are invisible to agents making purchase decisions on behalf of users.
5. For E-Commerce Clients: Prioritize Merchant Center Accuracy
UCP requires an active Merchant Center account with eligible product listings. If your client’s product feed is stale, their UCP integration starts at a disadvantage. Clean up feeds now.
The Metric That Replaces Rankings
In traditional SEO, the metric is ranking position. In agentic SEO, the emerging metric is Share of Model, how often your brand, product, or client is cited or transacted with by AI agents across the ecosystem.
Agencies that start building for this now, while most SEOs are still debating E-E-A-T tweaks, will likely lead the next decade of search.
