Brands that rank well on Google gain a head start in AI visibility, but the evidence does not support treating a strong organic position as a guarantee of a ChatGPT mention. A study of 10 laptop brands found that Google and AI visibility generally moved together, while several brands performed differently across the two systems.

For an agency managing client websites, that finding creates two tasks. The agency must protect and improve Google performance and determine whether AI systems can access the site, understand the brand’s use cases, and find the business information customers need.

What did the laptop study measure?

SEO Hacker examined 10 laptop brands: Apple, Lenovo, HP, Dell, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Samsung, LG and Razer. The study covered seven search themes, ranging from a broad query such as "laptop" to use-case queries such as "laptop for gaming."

For each theme, the study compared two measures. The first was the number of Google keywords for which a brand ranked. The second was how often that brand appeared in AI-generated answers for the corresponding searches. The researchers then checked whether those measures moved together.

What did the study find?

The positive relationship was strongest for the "best laptop" theme, where the correlation between Google keyword rankings and AI mentions reached about 0.88.

Lenovo, HP and ASUS led on both Google keyword coverage and AI mentions. The pattern was far from universal:

  • Dell ranked for many Google keywords but appeared in AI answers less often than its keyword count predicted.
  • Apple appeared in more AI answers than its Google keyword footprint would suggest.
  • Samsung had strong AI visibility overall, but it rarely appeared in answers related to buying a laptop.

The "laptop for remote work" theme showed a different opportunity. It had weak competition on Google but clear demand in AI questions. The study treated this as an opening for a brand willing to connect its content with that specific use case.

Why should an agency check beyond Google?

Other research shows why a client report that contains only Google rankings can miss a material part of AI visibility. A Chatoptic study of 15 brands across five competitive categories found that brands ranking on Google’s first page appeared in ChatGPT only 62% of the time. The correlation between Google position and ChatGPT placement was 0.034, which the researchers described as almost no relationship. Turning on ChatGPT browsing increased alignment with Google by only 1%, according to Chatoptic’s study.

A separate case study from Search Engine Land ran one hotel recommendation prompt 68 times and compared brand mentions, citations, related searches and search results from Google and Bing. The Baccarat Hotel appeared once, or 1.5% of the time, while the Fifth Avenue Hotel appeared 13 times and was cited 20% of the time. In that case, visibility for related searches on Bing aligned more closely with ChatGPT mentions than Google visibility did.

Google rankings do not fully reflect brand visibility across AI systems.

A larger analysis from Search Engine Journal examined 129,000 domains across 216,524 pages in 20 niches. Referring domains were the strongest measured factor associated with ChatGPT citations. Domains with up to 2,500 referring domains averaged 1.6 to 1.8 citations, while those with more than 350,000 averaged 8.4. Pages ranking between positions 1 and 45 in Google averaged five ChatGPT citations, compared with 3.1 for pages ranking from 64 to 75. These are correlations across the dataset, not proof that a Google position or backlink count directly causes an AI citation.

Content structure also showed an association. Pages with sections of 120 to 180 words between headings averaged 4.6 citations, while sections under 50 words averaged 2.7. Pages updated within three months averaged six citations, compared with 3.6 for outdated pages. The agency managing a client site can use those figures as review criteria, while avoiding the mistaken conclusion that one format or update date guarantees a mention.

What should an agency check for a client?

1. Measure the relevant Google positions over time

Start with the pages and buyer-intent queries connected to the client’s products or services. Record where those pages rank and whether the positions change as content and search activity change.

2. Check whether AI crawlers can read the site

The agency should review server responses, robots rules, canonical tags, rendered content and internal links. Any access problem should be documented with the affected URL and the technical cause before the team changes priority, content or promotion.

3. Test the customer’s path through the site

AI visibility should also be judged against practical customer tasks. Can a person find the phone number, business hours, service details and contact route without guessing?

4. Look beyond the client website

The laptop study recommends earning third-party reviews and comparisons. An agency can inventory the review and comparison sites relevant to the client’s category, identify factual gaps and track whether the business is represented accurately.

5. Keep the two visibility reports separate

A client dashboard should show Google rankings and AI-access findings as distinct measures.

What to do now

  1. Choose the buyer-intent searches that matter most to the client, then record the ranking page for each query in one baseline report.
  2. Audit access to the pages that answer those searches, including rendering, robots controls, canonical signals and internal linking.
  3. Run a browser-based customer task using only the live site, checking the phone number, opening hours, service details and contact path.
  4. Review the client’s presence in third-party comparisons and reviews, recording missing, outdated or inconsistent business information.
  5. Build use-case content that answers the selected buyer questions, then review Google performance and AI access again.

SEOScanPRO provides comprehensive website SEO audits, including a local SEO audit and on-page analysis.

A useful client review asks where the business ranks for its chosen searches and whether an AI system can retrieve and use the relevant pages. The laptop study supports using Google performance as a foundation. An agency still needs to check access, third-party evidence and buyer-intent visibility separately.

FAQ

Do Google rankings affect whether a brand shows up in ChatGPT?

The laptop study found a positive correlation between Google rankings and AI mentions, reaching about 0.88 for the "best laptop" theme. Rankings can support visibility, but they do not guarantee inclusion because Dell and Apple differed from the broader pattern.

Which laptop brands ranked on Google and also appeared in AI answers?

Lenovo, HP and ASUS led on both Google keywords and AI mentions. Dell ranked for many Google keywords but appeared less often in AI answers, while Apple appeared more often than its keyword count predicted.

How can an agency check a client site’s visibility?

Track the client’s Google positions for selected buyer-intent searches, check whether AI crawlers can read the relevant pages and review third-party reviews and comparisons. SEO Hacker also recommends tracking share of voice across buyer questions rather than relying only on broad traffic.
