OpenAI will give Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers one combined usage allowance for ChatGPT and Codex starting in December 2026. The change makes remaining capacity and reset times easier to track, while usage will depend on the selected model, task complexity, context, reasoning speed, and tools.
According to a notice published in OpenAI’s Help Center, immediate chat will remain outside the shared pool. Subscribers will be able to view combined remaining usage and reset times through the Usage area in Settings after the change takes effect.
How will the shared allowance work?
OpenAI will measure ChatGPT and Codex usage in tokens, the units of information that a model processes and generates. A subscriber’s consumption will vary by model and task. More advanced models and more complex requests will generally use more of the combined allowance.
The company said the change supports its effort to bring the agentic capabilities of Work, its ChatGPT experience for longer research and deliverable tasks, into the main ChatGPT experience.
Codex is already included across ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go. Codex Cloud, which runs coding tasks on computers managed by OpenAI, is available to eligible Plus accounts, all Pro tiers, and Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, and Education accounts.
Which features already draw from shared pools?
OpenAI already meters several products through shared allowances or credits. Codex, ChatGPT Work, ChatGPT for Excel, and Workspace Agents draw from a shared allowance and credit pool on plans that use this structure, according to OpenAI’s Codex documentation. ChatGPT for Word also draws from the shared usage allowance for Codex and other premium features.
The existing arrangement gives agencies a clear baseline for monitoring client usage across connected tools. From December, the same shared-allowance structure will also cover ChatGPT and Codex for Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers.
How will agencies monitor client consumption?
The consolidated view will show combined remaining usage and reset times under Settings, then Usage. That gives account managers one place to check how much capacity remains across ChatGPT and Codex.
Model choice and task design remain important controls. OpenAI’s documentation says consumption can vary according to the model, where a task runs, task complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools. A long-running task may consume substantially more allowance than a short request, so request size and model selection can affect when a limit is reached.
Codex limits currently operate across five-hour and weekly windows. Using a full banked reset refreshes both windows and changes the weekly reset date. OpenAI Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits.
What happens when a client reaches the limit?
Subscribers who reach the limit can wait for the allowance to reset, upgrade their plan, or buy credits to continue using eligible features. Agencies can include that choice in client onboarding and usage guidance so teams understand their options before a limit interrupts a work period.
How do Business seat limits work?
ChatGPT Business includes ChatGPT, Work, and Codex, with Standard and Premium seats available. Premium seats include more Work and Codex usage and have no five-hour usage limit. Standard seats use per-model local-message estimates within each five-hour window, with actual consumption varying by model and task.
Pro-model chat allowances remain separate from Work and Codex usage. Business Standard includes 15 Pro messages per month, while Business Premium includes 50 per week shared across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. OpenAI describes Instant chat as virtually unlimited, subject to anti-misuse safeguards under its Services Agreement.
What changes to existing Pro plans?
The December change follows several adjustments to the same allowances. ChatGPT release notes show that on October 29, 2026, OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex allowance included in Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans. It also canceled a reduction announced for Pro 200 in a September 29, 2026 email, giving affected Pro 200 subscribers twice their previous allowance and bringing them to the same limit.
The September release notes also introduced Pro 500, a plan priced at $500 per month with the highest included usage among the Pro plans. OpenAI reopened Pro 200 subscriptions at $200 per month.
OpenAI said it is preparing carefully for the December transition to reduce disruption to user workflows. The company expects most users will not need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they currently do.
What to do now
- Review client plans and usage records. Check which managed clients use Plus, Pro, or Business and identify workflows that depend on ChatGPT, Codex, Work, Word, Excel, or Workspace Agents.
- Document model and task choices. Record which models clients use, how complex their tasks are, how much context they provide, and whether work runs in ChatGPT or Codex Cloud. These factors help agencies anticipate changes in allowance consumption.
- Prepare a limit-response process. Give client teams clear instructions for waiting for a reset, considering a plan upgrade, or buying credits when the shared allowance is exhausted.
- Check Business seat assignments. Compare Standard and Premium seat allowances with each client’s expected Work and Codex activity, while keeping separate Pro-model message allowances in the review.
- Communicate the December change. Inform relevant client users that combined remaining usage and reset times will appear in the Usage area under Settings after the transition.
