Meta has released Muse Image, an AI image generator built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, that lets users tag an Instagram account and transform that person’s image into a new AI-generated picture. The feature, internally code-named Mango, is free through the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp, and critics say the default opt-out setup is a privacy risk.

What Meta has released

Meta introduced Muse Image, an AI image generator built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company’s dedicated AI unit. The feature, internally code-named Mango, is available for free through the Meta AI app, as well as on Instagram Stories and WhatsApp.

The core capabilities mirror other consumer image generators: creating illustrations, testing prompt ideas, or editing existing photos. Meta is also shipping preset prompts to help users who do not want to write their own.

The photo-tagging feature at the center of the backlash

Beyond standard generation, Muse includes a feature that lets a user tag another Instagram account and then transform that person’s image into a new AI-generated picture. Meta policy states that people may be able to create content with your Instagram content using AI features at Meta and that you will not be notified about content created using AI features at Meta.

Meta says users retain control and can disable the feature through their settings. The criticism centers on the default being opt-out rather than opt-in. As one X user quoted by The Verge put it, pulling real users into generated photos without explicit consent is a privacy landmine waiting to detonate.

What else can Muse do?

  • Custom advertising: Companies use AI to generate ads.
  • Interior decorating previews: A promotional video shows a user testing how a secondhand couch might look in a garage, with the feature designed to integrate with Facebook Marketplace listings.
  • Prompt-based image editing: Users can ask the model to place them in front of a historical landmark, remove a photobomber from a background, or generate a functional QR code.
  • New Instagram Stories effects: A suite of customizable filters for modifying existing photos, built on Muse.

Meta has positioned the launch as a free everyday tool, with paid limits for higher-volume usage. The company also confirmed that Muse Video, a video-generation counterpart, is in development.

Why is the reaction so pointed?

The response reflects long-running concerns about Meta’s handling of user data.

  • In 2019, Meta paid a then-record $5 billion FTC fine after regulators found that Cambridge Analytica had harvested data from tens of millions of Facebook users without their knowledge to build voter-targeting profiles ahead of the 2016 U.S. election. The company had known about the misuse for years before it became public.
  • In 2021, Meta shut down Facebook’s facial-recognition system amid lawsuits and regulatory pressure over its collection of biometric data.

The opt-out framing of Muse’s photo feature fits a pattern critics and regulators have flagged before: using people’s content by default unless they take action to stop it.

Where Muse fits in Meta’s broader AI push

Muse is part of a wider push across Meta’s consumer AI efforts. Earlier products include an AI assistant called Creator and Pocket, an app for vibe-coding video games. The launch arrives as Meta continues to spend heavily on AI infrastructure, even as outside observers have described the company’s AI strategy as uneven.

Whether Muse becomes a routine creative tool or another flashpoint will likely depend on how Meta handles the consent question, particularly for users whose public images can be pulled into new AI-generated content without a separate prompt to them.
