Google is testing a feature that lets Gemini call businesses on a user’s behalf. The feature, called Call for Me, can check whether a product is in stock, book a restaurant reservation, move an appointment to a different date, or place items on hold. It is rolling out first to Pixel 11 owners in the U.S. who pay for a Gemini subscription and install the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android.
What can Call for Me do?
Call for Me uses the user’s own phone number, and calls are dialed directly from their device. Once a call starts, Gemini introduces itself, navigates automated phone menus, waits on hold, and handles the conversation with the person on the other end. The user watches the call unfold through a live transcript and can take over at any point. Google says the AI can manage more involved tasks, including calling a store about stock, making a reservation, rescheduling an appointment, or holding an item.
Call for Me may reach beyond businesses
Android Authority reported early evidence that the feature could extend past company phone lines. Based on "Mom" and "John" examples spotted on an introductory screen, the site wrote that this version of Call for Me would clearly be equipped to handle interactions beyond those with businesses. The report notes Gemini may be limited on those calls to delivering messages or making basic inquiries.
For anyone who would rather not take a call from an AI, there is a planned off switch. Android Authority reported that Gemini will also be giving people the ability to opt out of receiving these calls. Both signals come from an APK teardown, so the timing and final shape are not confirmed by Google.
What personal information does the AI share?
Gemini can share personal information that the user approves in advance as part of the calls it makes. Google says that approved access is what lets the AI take a broader set of actions than its earlier calling features could. For a business, that means the caller on the line may be an assistant acting with a customer’s details, not the customer directly.
How does this build on Google’s earlier calling features?
Google has worked on AI-assisted calling for years. At its I/O developer conference, the company demonstrated Google Assistant calling a salon to make a reservation, adding filler sounds to make the exchange sound natural. It later rolled out Ask for Me, which let Gemini call businesses to inquire about pricing or services. Pixel owners have also had Hold for Me and Talk to a Live Rep, which navigate phone trees and wait on hold until a real person answers, and Direct My Call, which shows the numbers for navigating IVR menus on screen.
Why is the rollout limited?
Google said it is starting the experiment at a small scale because real-world conversations are nuanced, and it wants time to get the feature right before releasing it more widely. The beta requirement for the Phone app reflects that experimental stage. Google is not alone in the space: the article notes AI agents such as Meta’s Muse and Instinct can already place calls on users’ behalf.
What to do now
Rewritten sentence:
If an agency handles your website and listings, make your business easy for an AI caller, and the customer behind it, to deal with.
- Keep the phone number, hours, and address on your Google Business Profile and other listings accurate and up to date.
- Review your phone menu and hold flow. Gemini can navigate automated phone menus and wait on hold.
- Keep online availability current. The feature can call a store to ask if a product is in stock or make a restaurant reservation.
- Check how your business reads to AI search. BizScoreAI (bizscoreai.com) scores how visible a business is to AI search and shows what its listing looks like to the engines people ask.
- Brief front-desk staff that some callers may be an AI assistant that introduces itself on behalf of a customer, so they handle the request rather than hang up.
