Businesses can prepare for a broader Google AI Mode interface by tracking how client pages appear in AI answers, while continuing to maintain crawlable pages, clear answers and consistent business information. Google is testing a left sidebar on its main web search results page, but the change has not appeared consistently across browsers.
The tested layout places AI Mode chat history, a button for starting a new chat and a settings icon beside standard search results. If Google expands the test, searchers could reach a conversational search experience without leaving the page they started from.
What is Google testing?
According to Search Engine Roundtable, Damien Andell posted a screenshot on X on October 14, 2026, showing the sidebar on a regular results page. The layout included the small Google logo, past AI Mode chat threads, a new-chat button and settings.
Andell believed the sidebar had rolled out across searches, but Barry Schwartz said he could not reproduce it in any of his browsers. The conflicting observations support treating the interface as a test rather than a permanent default.
A later observation from Marie Haynes initially suggested that the sidebar displayed conversations from the Gemini app. She corrected that account after checking again. The conversations she saw came from Gemini’s Android overlay, not the standalone Gemini app. The distinction matters because the available evidence does not show a complete merger between the app and AI Mode.
The Chrome side-panel experiment is separate from the search-results sidebar. ChromeGeek reported on October 20, 2026 that Chrome Canary could open an empty AI Mode thread from the browser’s tab-sharing menu. The selected tabs were not yet passed into the conversation, which is a sign that this related interface was still under development.
What changes for agencies managing client websites?
An agency should treat the sidebar as another search surface to monitor, not as a reason to rebuild a client website. Its significance comes from placement. A persistent AI chat button beside ordinary results could make it easier for a searcher to continue a query conversationally instead of opening another result.
AI Mode already changes how complex searches are handled. Zapier reported that Google said at I/O 2026 AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling each quarter. It also described query fan-out, where Google divides a question into related searches, runs them across several data sources and combines the results into one response supported by web links.
That makes client content easier to assess through the questions it answers, rather than through one ranking position alone. A page may still earn ordinary visibility through crawlable text, useful information and solid performance. The new check is whether Google’s generated answer cites it when handling a relevant multi-part question.
How should an agency check AI-answer visibility?
Build a small set of relevant searches
Start with questions that customers are likely to ask before contacting a client. Run each question in AI Mode and record the sites it cites. Repeat the same set at regular intervals so the agency can see whether the client’s pages gain or lose citations.
Keep the questions stable. Ask follow-up questions during the same thread when the interface supports them, because AI Mode uses the existing conversation as context for later searches.
Review the cited page when the client is absent
If the client does not appear, inspect the page intended to answer that topic. Check whether it gives a direct answer, presents specific facts and makes claims that can be checked against supporting sources. Sayu’s analysis of the sidebar test recommends clear answers near the top of relevant pages, consistent business details and continued attention to crawlability and loading speed.
This should guide existing content work rather than trigger a site rebuild around a layout that may never launch.
Separate the experiment from durable work
The sidebar may remain limited, change or disappear. Google did not announce a permanent launch in the source material. Agencies should therefore separate two tasks: checking how often clients appear in AI answers, and maintaining the technical and editorial basics that support all search systems.
Conversation history also remains unsettled. The observed Android overlay threads do not establish that conversations from the Gemini app are merged into AI Mode.
What to do now
- Create a fixed AI-answer monitoring list. Choose relevant customer questions, run the same searches in AI Mode and record which sources Google cites.
- Check pages against the missing questions. Review whether each relevant page provides a concise answer, supporting facts and information that is easy for a person to verify.
- Confirm technical foundations. Keep important pages crawlable, maintain helpful content and review loading speed rather than rebuilding the site for a possible sidebar.
- Compare the result with ordinary rankings. Record whether a client page ranks in traditional results, appears in an AI answer or does both.
- Wait for confirmation before changing priorities. Google has shown the sidebar only to some observers, so the current evidence supports monitoring rather than treating it as the new search default.
What should agencies watch next?
Three details would clarify the direction. First, agencies should check whether the sidebar becomes visible across more accounts and browsers. Second, they should see whether chat history expands beyond the Gemini overlay. Third, repeated monitoring should show whether client pages cited in AI Mode responses change over time.
The immediate work is contained: use relevant questions, record citations, review useful pages and preserve the basics.
FAQ
What is the AI Mode left sidebar?
The AI Mode left sidebar is a vertical interface containing the Google logo, past AI Mode chats, a button for starting a new chat and a settings icon. Google is testing its appearance on the main web search results page.
Is the AI Mode sidebar already the default?
The sidebar has not been shown to be the default. Damien Andell reported seeing it on regular results, while Barry Schwartz could not reproduce it in any browser. The evidence indicates a limited test.
Does the sidebar include Gemini app conversations?
That has not been established. Marie Haynes corrected her initial observation and said the visible conversations came from the Gemini overlay on an Android phone, not the standalone Gemini app.
