Industrial brands have a new way to reach buyers: AI-generated answers now name and recommend companies directly, and getting mentioned inside them can build visibility that pays off over time. Across a set of 458 manufacturing and industrial keywords, Google’s AI Overviews grew from 38% of all search volume in January 2026 to 57% in July, a 19-point rise, even as AI tools still send only a small slice of total site traffic. The data below combines three Semrush datasets covering AI Overview presence, actual traffic channels, and the brands and domains cited and mentioned across AI answers.

How much are AI Overviews growing in manufacturing search?

AI Overviews are becoming a standard part of the results page in this sector. They are no longer limited to informational searches like "what is a transformer." Specific product queries such as "pneumatic cylinder" and "csla2gf" gained an AI Overview during the tracked period, and so did brand searches like "National Instruments." Because AI Overviews can reduce clicks to websites, the expectation is that organic traffic declines as their presence expands.

Where does manufacturing website traffic come from?

Clickstream data shows how much traffic reaches a set of manufacturing domains and through which channels. The top two channels, direct and organic search, accounted for nearly 80% of all sessions to these sites. AI Mode and AI assistants combined for just 0.48% of all sessions, which places the sector in the early stages of AI-referred traffic. Direct traffic share is growing while organic search traffic is declining, a sign that the way people navigate to industrial sites is shifting even when demand holds steady.

Brands can still benefit from visibility in AI answers. A survey of more than 600 B2B professionals found that buyers already use AI to shortlist vendors and inform purchases worth over $1,000. Buyers often follow up on an AI conversation with a Google search or a direct visit to a brand named in the answer. That delayed visit is hard to capture with traditional analytics, a pattern some marketers describe as a "dark funnel" for AI. Growing direct traffic or branded search traffic can signal improving AI visibility even when no AI referral shows up in reports.

Brand mentions and cited sources are two different rankings

Using the Semrush AI Visibility database, the study benchmarked the brands most mentioned and the sources most cited in AI answers. A mention is a brand name appearing in the text of an answer. A citation is a link the AI points to as a source. The two lists rarely overlap.

The most-mentioned brands, led by 3M, John Deere, and Boeing, are established names buyers already trust. Most of these companies existed roughly 100 years before OpenAI or Gemini, and their wide range of product lines makes them relevant to a large number of prompts. Only two brands, Vevor and Grainger, appear on both the top 15 mentions list and the top 15 citations list.

The most-cited domains are a mix of directories, brands, distributors, and reference sites, including engineerfix.com, vevor.com, thermofisher.com, sigmaaldrich.com, made-in-china.com, rs-online.com, thebluebook.com, grainger.com, thomasnet.com, procore.com, rsc.org, protoolreviews.com, globalspec.com, carrier.com, and energysage.com.

Do the most-cited sites have the most authority?

Authority Score is Semrush’s method of scoring how trusted a domain is, based on organic traffic, backlinks, and spam signals. The most-mentioned brands showed a consistent, strong Authority Score. The most-cited sources varied widely. The top-cited domain, engineerfix.com, carried an Authority Score of just 17, while made-in-china.com scored 77, higher than any of the top-mentioned brands. Website authority appears to correlate more with earning AI mentions than with earning citations, which means the work that builds site authority can also earn more mentions.

Why does one site get cited by ChatGPT but not by Google?

The platforms behave differently. Most large language models named the same top brands, but they cited a different mix of sources. engineerfix.com was cited heavily by ChatGPT yet did not crack the top-cited sources on any of Google’s AI platforms, including Gemini, AI Mode, and AI Overviews.

Semrush shows engineerfix.com ranking for only about 3,700 keywords on Google with little estimated traffic, after a brief spike around spring 2022. The site still pulls close to 300,000 monthly organic visits, because DuckDuckGo, Bing, and Yahoo drive more than 68% of its traffic while Google accounts for less than 2%. OpenAI, Google, and other search engines each collect and cite sources in their own way, so a strategy that wins citations on ChatGPT may not win them on AI Overviews at the same rate. Tracking AI visibility means looking beyond Google to every place AI gathers information.

Do more mentions or citations mean more AI traffic?

Clickstream data for the top-mentioned domains over seven months shows that mention counts do not reliably predict AI traffic. Vevor.com and grainger.com pull AI traffic that rivals or exceeds what their mention counts suggest, and siemens.com’s AI traffic exceeds its mention count outright. Citations are inconsistent too: engineerfix.com leads on ChatGPT citations but receives only a fraction of the AI traffic that lower-ranked domains get, while made-in-china.com and rsc.org rank among the highest for AI traffic among cited sources.

Page type helps explain the gap. A citation for a marketplace or distributor page gives a reader a clear next step, such as placing an order. One of Grainger’s top pages for AI traffic is a product page for a Motorola two-way radio. Made-in-China’s large catalog can help someone find or buy a product. For rsc.org, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the most-cited pages sit in an /element/ subfolder with entries for elements like neon, iron, lithium, and chlorine, while the pages earning the most clicks are peer-reviewed papers in a /content/ subfolder covering PFAS chemistry, composite materials, and biodegradable coatings. Dense, original research and detailed reference material give readers a reason to click through, something a generic reference article does not, since an AI answer can summarize it without a visit.

FAQ

How often do AI Overviews appear in manufacturing searches?

Across 458 tracked manufacturing and industrial keywords, AI Overviews appeared on 57% of search volume in July 2026, up from 38% in January, a 19-point increase.

How much website traffic comes from AI search in manufacturing?

AI Mode and AI assistants combined account for 0.48% of all sessions to manufacturing sites, while direct and organic search together make up nearly 80%.

Is being mentioned by AI the same as being cited as a source?

No. A mention is a brand name appearing in the answer text, while a citation is a link the AI credits as a source. Of the top 15 domains on each list, only Vevor and Grainger appear on both.
