Google has started auto-expanding AI Overviews into a fuller AI Mode response, with the follow-up “Ask anything” box opened by default for some queries. The result is a much larger AI answer sitting at the top of the results page, and the traditional blue-link listings pushed far below the fold.
What changed in the AI Overview
Previously, an AI Overview rendered a short snippet, and a person had to click “Show more” to see the full generated response. For selected queries, Google now skips that step and loads the complete AI Mode-style answer immediately, with the prompt box for follow-up questions already open.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the behavior, saying: “For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people.” The same statement added that Google’s research shows users find Search more helpful with this dynamic experience and engage deeper in follow-up exploration.
How the scroll behavior works
Google has built a guardrail into the expansion. If a person has already started scrolling down the page to read content below the AI Overview, the system cancels the expansion so the reader’s position is not lost. In other words, the auto-expand only kicks in for visitors who are still near the top of the page and have not begun moving past the AI answer.
What it means for organic search results
With a full AI answer and an open follow-up box loaded by default, the ten blue links, paid placements, and other organic surfaces sit much further down the page. For publishers and site owners whose traffic depends on ranking in the top results, the usable real estate above the fold shrinks whenever Google treats a query as a candidate for the expanded experience.
The change signals Google’s continued push of AI Mode as the default search interface. What used to require a click to reveal now appears immediately for queries the system flags as best served by an AI-generated response, which is a meaningful shift in how much of the screen the AI answer occupies.
Where to see it in action
Reproductions of the new behavior show the full AI Overview rendering on first paint, with the follow-up question box already expanded and ready for input. Compared to the older design, where the AI snippet was a compact card and the rest of the results page sat just beneath it, the new layout buries traditional results well below the AI block.
FAQ
What is the new Google AI Overview behavior?
For some queries, Google now automatically expands the AI Overview into a full AI Mode-style response and opens the “Ask anything” follow-up box by default, without requiring a click on “Show more.”
Does Google still show the ten blue links?
Yes, but they are pushed much further down the page because the expanded AI answer and the open follow-up box take up significantly more space above the fold.
Can a user stop the AI Overview from expanding?
Google cancels the dynamic expansion if a user has already started scrolling, so the experience is designed to keep the reader from losing their place on the page.
