Google Maps is expanding its conversational Ask Maps feature with agentic food ordering, hotel and event discovery, live transit delay tracking, and optional Gmail-based personalization. The updates are rolling out in the U.S. now, with Ask Maps itself already available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, plus more than 150 countries and territories in English.
What is new in Ask Maps?
Ask Maps now handles multi-step tasks through natural language requests, drawing on Gemini model capabilities layered on top of Google’s map data. Users can order takeout from restaurants along their route, compare hotel prices and availability, browse nearby events, and monitor bus, train, subway, and ferry delays in real time. Past conversations can also be resumed when history settings are on, so users can ask Maps to recall suggestions from a previous trip planning session.
How does agentic food ordering work?
Users can describe a craving and a pickup context in a single prompt. For example, asking Maps to “order spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home” causes Ask Maps to find open restaurants along the route that serve the dish, factoring in saved places and dietary needs. Once a restaurant is selected, Ask Maps adds the requested dish directly to the cart so the user can review and complete the order.
Food ordering is launching with partners Square and Toast, with Uber Eats support described as coming soon. Google says it will continue to evolve the experience as it co-develops the Universal Commerce Protocol for Food with partners.
Can Ask Maps find hotels and events now?
Yes. Ask Maps compares real-time prices and availability when users describe what they want. A sample request, “For next week’s conference in downtown Miami, find me a decently priced, top-rated hotel with an artsy vibe, within walking distance from a gym and restaurants,” returns matching options. Nearby concerts, comedy shows, and other events are also surfaced, complete with ticket links.
What is Personal Intelligence and how does it use Gmail?
Personal Intelligence is an opt-in feature that lets Ask Maps connect to Gmail, with Calendar support planned. When connected, Ask Maps factors in upcoming flights, dinner reservations, and other plans pulled from email, so users do not have to re-explain their schedule. A user traveling for a conference could ask, “Give me ideas on how to spend a few hours near the hotel before my flight tomorrow,” and receive recommendations based on their hotel reservation, plus tips on when to leave for the airport.
Google emphasizes that Gmail connection is off by default and the user decides whether to enable it. The feature is described as built with privacy in mind, and Google points users to its privacy approach documentation for further detail.
How do real-time transit updates work in Ask Maps?
A new transit widget inside Ask Maps shows up-to-the-minute delays for buses, trains, subways, and ferries. A user asking, “Is there a ferry to get to Taronga Zoo with views of the Opera House?” sees a virtual departure board with all options, and if a ferry is running late, the displayed wait time updates minute by minute so the user knows exactly when to head to the dock.
How can users contribute updates conversationally?
Ask Maps and the Contribute tab now accept suggested edits phrased as natural language. Users can upload a photo of a storefront sign, and Maps will detect new business hours from the image and ask the user to confirm before submitting. Insider tips, such as “more parking is available behind the building,” can also be shared by chat, and Maps surfaces the information to other users in the community. Google’s built-in protection systems review suggested edits for accuracy and reject those that violate its policies.
Where and when are these features available?
The live transit widget, more personalized responses, and conversation memory are rolling out everywhere Ask Maps is available. Food ordering, hotel and event discovery, and conversational contributions are rolling out in the U.S. now, with additional countries planned over time.
