According to NewSunSEO, its 12-step technical SEO audit can help identify why Long Island business websites fail to rank: not bad content, but invisible infrastructure blocking Google and AI search tools from crawling, indexing, and ranking the site. Run this checklist in 2026 to fix crawlability, Core Web Vitals, schema, and AI bot access before they cost you traffic.

Most Long Island business websites aren’t struggling because of bad content or a poor product. They’re invisible because of technical SEO issues, problems hiding deep in site structure, code, and configuration that prevent Google and AI search tools from properly crawling, indexing, and ranking them.

NewSunSEO runs a structured technical audit on new client sites. This is the exact 12-step checklist we use in 2026.

1. Crawlability and robots.txt

Your robots.txt file tells search engines and AI bots which parts of your site to access. A misconfigured file can silently block Google from indexing your most important pages.

In 2026, there’s a new wrinkle: you need to differentiate between AI training bots (like GPTBot) and AI retrieval bots (like OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot). Blocking GPTBot is reasonable if you don’t want your content used for model training. But blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot means your site won’t appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity search results.

  • No critical pages accidentally blocked
  • AI retrieval bots (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleBot) explicitly allowed
  • robots.txt accessible at the root domain

2. XML Sitemap Health

Your sitemap is the roadmap you hand Google for your site. A broken or outdated sitemap, one that includes 404 pages, redirects, or noindex URLs, wastes crawl budget and sends mixed signals.

  • Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
  • No 4xx or redirected URLs included
  • All indexable pages listed; no noindex pages included
  • Last modified dates are accurate

3. Indexation Audit

Search Console shows you exactly how many pages Google has indexed. Compare that to your sitemap. Gaps mean orphaned pages, pages that exist but won’t rank because they’re not indexed.

Common culprits: pagination pages, tag archives, parameter URLs from old campaigns, and session ID URLs.

4. Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS)

Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. The 2026 thresholds:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): under 2.5 seconds (good) / 2.5-4s (needs improvement) / 4s+ (poor)
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): under 200ms, replaced FID in 2024
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): under 0.1

A new metric gaining attention in 2026 is VSI (Visual Stability Index), tracking layout shifts across the full page load. Not yet a ranking factor, but worth monitoring.

What we check: Field data in Search Console, not just lab scores from PageSpeed Insights.

5. Mobile-First Rendering

Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If your mobile layout is missing content or hides sections behind toggles, Google may not see that content at all, and it won’t rank.

  • Mobile and desktop versions have identical primary content
  • No content hidden via CSS that isn’t in the mobile DOM
  • Google Search Console Mobile Usability report: zero errors

6. HTTPS and Security

HTTPS is table stakes, but implementation errors are still common, especially on older Long Island business sites that migrated from HTTP years ago.

  • Valid, non-expired SSL certificate
  • All pages serve over HTTPS, no mixed content warnings
  • HTTP redirects to HTTPS (301, not 302)
  • No redirect chains: collapse http to https to www into a single hop

7. Site Architecture and Internal Linking

Google and AI search tools reward flat, logical site architecture. Every important page should be reachable within 3 clicks from the homepage. Internal links pass PageRank, they’re one of the most underused ranking levers for SMBs.

Why this matters for AI Overviews: Google’s AI Overviews prefer well-organized sites with clear topical authority. Siloed content with poor internal linking gets skipped.

  • No orphaned pages (important pages with zero internal links)
  • Anchor text is descriptive, not generic
  • Service pages cross-link to related service pages and location pages

8. Structured Data and Schema Markup

Schema markup is no longer optional. Google’s AI Overviews pull directly from structured data to surface business information, FAQs, reviews, and more in featured positions.

For Long Island businesses, the most valuable schema types:

  • LocalBusiness, name, address, phone, hours, service area
  • FAQPage, key questions your customers ask (high AI Overview eligibility)
  • Service, individual services with descriptions and areas served
  • AggregateRating, pulls star ratings into search results

9. llms.txt Protocol

What is llms.txt and why does it matter in 2026? The llms.txt file is the biggest overlooked opportunity of 2026. This new standard tells AI agents, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, which pages on your site are authoritative and worth citing in AI-generated responses.

Most Long Island business sites don’t have one yet. Adding it to your root domain may be one of the fastest ways to improve visibility in AI search results.

10. Redirect Audit

Every redirect chain costs you link equity. A→B→C may lose roughly 10-15% of link value per hop unnecessarily.

  • All redirects are 301 (permanent), not 302 (temporary)
  • No chains longer than one hop
  • No redirect loops
  • Old campaign URLs point directly to the final destination

11. JavaScript Rendering

AI bots don’t execute JavaScript. If your site relies on JavaScript to render primary content, menus, service descriptions, testimonials, contact info, AI crawlers see a blank page. Googlebot renders JS but does it slowly and with lower priority.

  • Core content exists in the raw HTML source, not injected by JS
  • View-source test: does the content appear without JS execution?
  • JS frameworks use server-side rendering (SSR) or static generation

12. Continuous Monitoring

A one-time audit is not enough. Errors creep back in after plugin updates, theme changes, and new content pushes. The final step is putting monthly monitoring in place so new issues get caught before they cost you rankings.

  • Monthly Search Console error check
  • Core Web Vitals field data review
  • Re-verification after major site changes
