Google search rankings seem to be getting super volatile again around October 20 and 21, 2026, which Search Engine Roundtable reads as an unconfirmed Google search ranking update. Movement in the results climbed to unusually high levels over a 24-hour span, and discussion across the SEO community spiked at the same time, even as some third-party tracking tools struggled to register it. A larger core update is widely expected soon, and this burst of activity may be Google testing ahead of it.

What is driving the ranking volatility?

Two signals arrived together, according to Search Engine Roundtable: rankings swinging sharply and a one-day jump in industry chatter. Neither is a confirmed announcement from Google. The combination reads as an unconfirmed update in progress. Many in the field expected a core update before now, and some still expect one later in the month. This follows an earlier unconfirmed update reported on October 16, and a run of movement that began in early September.

What are site owners reporting?

The comments collected by Search Engine Roundtable and the WebmasterWorld forum describe sharp, inconsistent swings. Several site owners said traffic from Search and Discover dropped off again, with real-time counts jumping from around 10 visitors to 40 and back within minutes, repeating through the day. A recurring pattern was impressions and average position rising while clicks fell. One commenter described ranking in the top three for many keywords yet seeing "clicks down about 60-70%", and wondered whether AI Overviews had expanded in that category. Another called a Monday’s conversions the "worst in about three years".

Google Discover came up repeatedly. Some said Discover sent traffic for only an hour or two before it stopped, and one described the feed as "completely empty for days", something they said they had never seen before. One suggested Discover shelf life had changed, so stories are replaced by rivals faster and publishers have to keep producing content to hold traffic. Not everyone was down: one reported traffic "up 70% over last October", and a few noted CPM or traffic improving slightly.

How does this fit the recent update history?

The Google September 2026 spam update started on September 24, 2026 at around 12:00 pm ET and completed on October 8, 2026 at 4:37 am ET, according to Search Engine Roundtable, which recorded three waves of volatility during the rollout: September 25 through 27, September 30, and October 4 through 6. Before the spam update came an unconfirmed update around September 23 and 24, volatility on September 15, and an unsettled stretch from September 4 through 13.

The movement did not stop after October 21. Search Engine Roundtable reported further heavy volatility on Saturday, October 24, captured this time by many of the tracking tools, which it took as a sign of another Google search adjustment released Friday into Saturday.

Why do the tracking tools disagree?

Across the set Search Engine Roundtable monitors, which includes AccuRanker, Algoroo, AWR, CognitiveSEO, DataForSEO, Mangools, Mozcast, Semrush, Serpstat, SimilarWeb, Sistrix, Wincher, Wireboard and Zutrix, some tools showed large swings while others barely moved over the same dates. That spread is part of why the activity stays unconfirmed, and there is now a documented reason the underlying data has been shaky.

PPC Land reported on October 13, 2026 that Google has been returning what the search data company DemandSphere calls "spurious results" on roughly 11% of the search pages it collects each day, and that a separate vendor, Nozzle, counts 8% poisoned pages. Rank trackers load Google’s results pages automatically, millions of times a day, routing requests through pools of consumer IP addresses so the traffic looks like ordinary home users. Ray Grieselhuber, founder and chief executive of DemandSphere, wrote in an October 12 LinkedIn post that "the news is finally breaking about problems in SERP / rank tracking across the industry."

According to PPC Land, the trouble built over the summer: in early July the FBI and DOJ appeared to have worked with Google to seize the proxy network of NetNut, with Google’s Threat Intelligence Group putting the figure at around two million devices and the parent company disputing the allegations; Google wrapped its result links in redirects in August; and blocking intensified from around September 11. Grieselhuber wrote that he has "been working in this space for 20+ years and the stretch since early September has been the worst that we have seen in terms of challenges to acquire this data," and that "Google does not want the AI labs to use their SERPs as part of their live retrieval process to answer questions." PPC Land notes DemandSphere is not a neutral observer: it sells rank tracking and AI search visibility data, and the figures come from its own systems unless stated otherwise. DemandSphere’s response was to add a feature that reports error and sampling rates alongside the ranking data, so customers can see how much of a day’s data is reliable.

For an agency watching client sites, one option is to look at more than one tool’s reading rather than relying on a single source. A rank tracker is one such source, and SEOScanPro‘s rank tracker can check as often as every five minutes.

What to do now

Owners can work through this checklist with their agency as results come in:

  1. Ask your agency to compare Search Console impressions against clicks for your main pages. Some site owners reported rising impressions with falling clicks, and one wondered whether AI Overviews had increased in their category.
  2. Talk with your agency about the timing of any major site changes.
  3. Keep a dated record of which pages and queries moved.
  4. If Google Discover sends you traffic, keep publishing and refreshing content, given reports that stories are being replaced faster.

FAQ

Is Google running a confirmed update around October 20 and 21, 2026?

No. The activity is an unconfirmed update inferred from high ranking volatility and a spike in industry chatter, per Search Engine Roundtable. Google has not confirmed it, and a core update is widely expected soon.

When did the September 2026 spam update run?

It started on September 24, 2026 at around 12:00 pm ET and completed on October 8, 2026 at 4:37 am ET, according to Search Engine Roundtable, with three waves of volatility on September 25 through 27, September 30, and October 4 through 6.

Why do ranking tracking tools disagree during this volatility?

Some tools showed large swings over these dates while others barely moved. PPC Land reported on October 13, 2026 that Google has been returning what DemandSphere calls spurious results on roughly 11% of the pages it collects each day, with Nozzle counting 8% poisoned pages, so readings vary from one tool to the next.
