Basis Unveils Web Interface For Sensor-Laden Fitness Band
The makers of the Basis fitness band were at Pepcom’s Digital Experience event showing off their namesake accessory, but that’s not all that they wanted to reveal. They also demoed their new web interface, which is meant to take all of data the Basis can collect and it turn into a meaningful way for users to track their activity levels. If you’re not familiar with the Basis, the first thing you notice about it is that it’s chock-full of sensors — on top of drawing data from a built-in accelerometer, the Basis also sports an optical sensor that it uses to determine your heart rate. The Basis is also capable of tracking its user’s galvanic skin response, not to mention measuring both ambient temperature and body temperature. With all these sensors, it’s easy to imagine that the Basis could overload its users with too much fine-grained activity data. Continue reading

My greatest creation was you.” Baby Ivy was born sometime on Jan. 7. Continue reading
Beyonce’s Newborn Makes Cameo in Jay-Z’s New Song [LISTEN]
Beyonce and Jay-Z have yet to give us a visual glimpse of their newborn girl, Blue Ivy Carter, but on Monday they did dish out some revealing ear candy in which we hear the infant for the first time. A new Jay-Z song — “Glory” (listen below) — features Blue Ivy at the end of the track after the proud poppa raps, “Words can’t describe what I’m feeling for real. Baby, I paint the sky Blue. My greatest creation was you.” Baby Ivy was born sometime on Jan. 7. She is reportedly named after two album titles: Jay-Z’s The Blueprint and Beyonce’s 4 , which is IV in Roman numerals. Jay-Z announced the song Monday via a tweet , which includes a link to the track on his web site Life + Times . What do you think of the song and its lyrics, which reference a miscarriage and other intimate details? How Twitter Reacted to Blue Ivy’s Birth Blue Ivy made a name for herself before she even had a name or was born. Continue reading
AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 Is Official: 4.3-Inch AMOLED, LTE, 8MP Camera
It’s not exactly a surprise at this point, but Nokia has just officially revealed the long-awaited Nokia Lumia 900. Formerly known as the Ace , the Mango-powered 900 packs pretty much everything we expected it would — a 1.4 GHz CPU, 512 MB of RAM, and the same sort of 8-megapixel sensor as seen on its little brother the Lumia 800. Despite having the same camera, the 900 definitely beats its little brother when it comes to displays as the 900′s 4.3-inch AMOLED display is a solid step above the Lumia 800′s 3.7-inch LCD. Of course, there’s a front-facing camera too, and users can get their video chat on thanks to the inclusion of the Tango app. All of those goodies go inside the same sort of polycarbonate shell as seen on the Lumia 800, and Windows Phones fans will be able to pick up one in either black or a fetching cyan. As Nokia CEO Stephen Elop hinted at this morning at AT&T’s Developer Summit, the 900 is also the company’s first LTE-based Windows Phone (though not the first LTE Windows Phone we’ve heard about today). Many people were disappointed to see that the low-end Lumia 710 would be the first Nokia Windows Phone to hit the United States, but I daresay the 900 was worth the extra time. Sadly, the wait stretches on even longer — there’s no word yet on pricing or availability. Developing… Continue reading

61 Percent Of Disqus Comments Are Made With Pseudonyms
One of the unending debates in blogging circles is about the value of comments. How do you encourage the best comments and discourage the anonymous trolls? Do you even need comments? Or do you enforce civility by requiring real names, through the use of Facebook comments (which is what we currently use on TechCrunch) at the expense of discouraging conversation? But there is a middle ground between anonymous commenters and those with real names: commenters who use pseudonyms. Continue reading

Apple the company may be one of the largest on the planet, with more cash on hand than the U.S. government . But have you ever wondered about how it compares to the fruit of the same name? Of course you have. This MBA Online infographic raises the all-important question: how does the lunch box-staple fruit stack up against the Cupertino tech giant? (Founder Stories) ZocDoc’s Massoumi On Hitting The Heart Of Health Care Needs
You need a doctor and you need a doctor who takes your insurance. Instead of having to fumble through antiquated lists complied by your provider, ZocDoc seeks to expedite the process of locating care by displaying physicians in your area who are available for immediate and long-term appointments. Doctors pay a fee to join ZocDoc, which has secured $95 million in funding, spread to more than a dozen United States cities and has hired 200+ employees since 2007. In part II of Cyrus Massoumi’s Founder Stories interview with Chris Dixon , Massoumi tells Dixon why he thinks ZocDoc found a following and offers advice to other entrepreneurs. Massoumi attributes ZocDoc’s success to hitting the nexus of easing friction for both patients and doctors. Patients save time booking appointments and doctors easily fill vacancies, including vacancies in the “hidden supply of health care” formed from last minute cancellations. He calls it a “win-win” situation. Continue reading
AT&T Shows Off a Slew of Android and Windows Phones
It’s one of the reasons why CES may be inching closer to extinction : so many products are announced at once that each one has a hard time distinguishing itself from the pack. AT&T demonstrated this amply when it let loose a scattershot barrage of new devices Monday — three from Samsung, one from HTC, two from Pantech, and a couple of intriguing firsts from Sony and Nokia that almost got lost in the shuffle. Chief among the Samsung Android devices — all with 4G LTE, all running Android 2.3 — is the Galaxy Note . This long-anticipated phone-tablet hybrid boasts a 5-inch screen and an “S-Pen” stylus for note-taking, cropping and copy-pasting. Samsung has shipped more than a million Galaxy Notes internationally — although the company won’t break out figures for how many it actually sold. No precise word on when the Note will arrive, other than “soon.” We’ll be getting our own hands-on at the Samsung booth, and we’re keen to see for ourselves whether a Newton -like stylus-based device can make it in the U.S., or if Steve Jobs was right when he insisted that a stylus was the death of touchscreens. Meanwhile, for the eco-conscious among us who get a little queasy when we consider what all this gadgetry is doing to the planet, there’s the Samsung Exhilarate — a phone constructed from 80% recycled computer parts Continue reading
