Building the search engine of the future, one baby step at a time
Larry Page once described the perfect search engine as understanding exactly what you mean and giving you back exactly what you want. It’s very much like the computer I dreamt about as a child growing up in India, glued to our black-and-white TV for every episode of Star Trek. I imagined a future where a starship computer would be able to answer any question I might ask, instantly. Today, we’re closer to that dream than I ever thought possible during my working life—and here are some of the latest steps we’re taking today to make search even more intelligent: 1. Understanding the world In May we launched the Knowledge Graph , our database of more than 500 million real-world people, places and things with 3.5 billion attributes and connections among them. The feedback has been phenomenally positive and we want to extend this feature to people outside the U.S Continue reading

Winemakers sip their way to success with Google Apps for Business
Posted by Ella Kim, Google Enterprise team From growing the fruit and sending it off to the crushpad to bottling that first blend, winemakers are working from sunrise to sunset. When you see how much work goes into creating the perfect bottle, it’s apparent that a strong passion for wine is the driving force behind each company’s success. Here’s how three Californians with a love for wine turned to Google Apps for Business to help them start their own wine labels. When longtime friends Noah Dorrance, Baron Ziegler and Steve Graf started Banshee Wines, all three still had day jobs. While they wanted to fulfill their dreams of opening a winery, they worked and lived in different areas of Northern California, and it was tough to get started. Without a physical office to work from, they turned to Google Apps for Business to create a virtual one. Continue reading

Pagination & Canonicalization for the Pros – SMX Advanced 2012 was originally published on BruceClay.com, home of expert search engine optimization tips . What’s this techy session about? Here’s the description on the agenda: Using the pagination tag with optional parameters, sort orders, and filters. Are there still reasons to use robots.txt or noindex? Now you can polish up Google’s translation of your website
Webmaster level: All (Cross-posted on the Google Translate Blog ) Since we first launched the Website Translator plugin back in September 2009, more than a million websites have added the plugin. While we’ve kept improving our machine translation system since then, we may not reach perfection until someone invents full-blown Artificial Intelligence . In other words, you’ll still sometimes run into translations we didn’t get quite right. So today, we’re launching a new experimental feature (in beta) that lets you customize and improve the way the Website Translator translates your site. Once you add the customization meta tag to a webpage, visitors will see your customized translations whenever they translate the page, even when they use the translation feature in Chrome and Google Toolbar . They’ll also now be able to ‘ suggest a better translation ’ when they notice a translation that’s not quite right, and later you can accept and use that suggestion on your site Continue reading
