SEO Benchmark

Hi all, I will be undertaking a new customer and website within a week and there will be big focus on SEO results. I’d like to some how benchmark the site as it presently is – a score of some sort, so as to be able to give the customer solid evidence that their SEO is improving. Where do you guys suggest starting?
